  1. Ted, I had a insulation company give me an appraisal, he also said remove the vermiculite first. You know what gets me so mad. Canada has banned the thing, yet they sell it to India, there the young people don’t even have masks! I’m from India also. My health is down the tubes anyway, I have stage 3-4 brain cancer…but I do worry about my kids, still. And if it has already gone through the house in bits here and there???

I am keeping active and positive…so cross your fingers for me please..

  2. An energy was audit was done for me 2 years ago. The fella said that I had vermiculite in the attic flooring, it might contain asbestos don’t go up there. I have had the house for 17 yrs. It is cold in the north facing part, more warm in the south. Should I blow insulation in on the floor? remove the vermiculite first? have a combination of radiant foil and batt insulation? Foam spray is pricey for me.

    • Tracy – vermiculite is one of those “red flags”. Only certain mines had asbestos, so it’s not definite. But until you have it tested, you don’t know.
Given that you have a variety of issues, including dust problems, I would suggest that you take this seriously. If you don’t deal with it now, then when you try to sell the house, the inspector will probably flag it and it may scare away potential buyers. Rules are getting tougher on this too, so you may have problems finding contractors to deal with your home insulation because they won’t want to disturb the vermiculite or risk their own health.
Your best bet is to call in a professional remediation service to remove it then reinsulate your attic. It won’t be a cheap job if they do it right because they’ll have to take all sorts of precautions to ensure the dust doesn’t get into your home, but if you don’t pay for it now, you’ll pay for it later – either in affected health or the value of your home.
