This will most likely be construed as shameless self-promotion, but on the subject of pipes freezing during the winter, we published this article not too long ago – http://www.pieforensic.com/winter-season-water-losses.html.
As for a personal experience, I did have a former landlord attempt to blame myself and my roommates for a gas pipe freezing and bursting during the winter. Unfortunately, the man refused to replace our heater, which is why the pipe burst in the first place.
